Five Essential Tips For Maintaining Great Oral Health

May 3, 2018 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

Taking care of your teeth is critical to overall health. Keeping your mouth healthy has a plethora of benefits, including a nice smile and a prolonged life. Many dentists agree on one important thing – taking preventative measures is the best way maintain good oral hygiene.

One Mesa Dentist recommends the following five tips to help keep your teeth strong, your smile bright, and your health in great standing.

Brush and Floss Twice a Day

Yes, you should always brush at least once a day. Having said that, twice a day is best. Although it sounds difficult, the best time to brush is actually right after you eat a meal; you should also floss at the same time. You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes, while making sure you cover all angles and teeth.

Hydrate Often

Water is not only critical to your overall health, but it also encourages the production of saliva which is important for healthy teeth. As an alternative to sugar drinks such as soda and juice, water is also much healthier and better for your teeth. Over time, bacteria use sugar on your teeth to form plaque. If not treated properly, this can cause tooth decay.

Don’t Eat Sugary Foods

Not only should you avoid drinks that contain sugar, but you should also steer clear of sugar foods. Things that you should stay away from include over-indulging on candy and desserts. If you’re someone who does, in fact, eat a lot of sugar, make sure you brush your teeth well after eating.

Get Plenty of Calcium and Vitamin D

Calcium is essential to maintaining strong teeth and bones. Sure, you can get a regular source of calcium from dairy and nuts. However, you can also get calcium through vitamin supplements. In order for your body to absorb calcium, it needs Vitamin D. Thus, make sure you are getting enough sunlight each and every day.

Visit A Dentist Every Six Months

In order to maintain great oral health, make sure you are visiting a dentist at least twice per year. Dentists will thoroughly clean your teeth and check for cavities, keeping your dental hygiene in optimal condition.

As you continue to maintain a high level of oral hygiene, make sure you’re following the aforementioned tips. Ultimately, you’ll feel cleaner, stronger, and more confident in yourself. Above all, your mouth and body will thank you for it in the end.
