Does Cranberry Juice Actually Prevent UTIs

April 17, 2019 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever experienced the unpleasant burning and cramping typical of a UTI, you’ve probably heard that cranberry juice can help. Many people turn to this small, antioxidant-rich berry to avoid the dangers of antibiotics for UTI treatment. Whether you like the tart taste of cranberries or not, you probably want to know if the deep red juice is really an effective way to get rid of an infection. Based on some interesting research, you may not want to rely entirely on cranberry juice if you’re wondering how to avoid UTIs.

The Role of D-Mannose and Antioxidants in Infection

Many colorful foods, including cranberries, contain antioxidants and d-mannose. Antioxidants boost overall health by supporting a healthy pH, which can keep bad bacteria from thriving in the body. They also boost the immune system and help the body naturally fight off infections.

D-mannose also helps prevent infection by literally flushing undesirable bacteria out of the body and by blocking E. coli receptors. Since E. coli is responsible for up to 90 percent of urinary tract infections, d-mannose can be a powerful tool for preventing UTI.

How To Fight UTIs

While it’s true that cranberry juice contains both antioxidants and the sugar d-mannose, you’d have to drink massive amounts to get the effect you want. Instead of relying on the tart juice alone, the best home remedy for UTIs may be the following routine:

  • Regularly take a UTI-prevention product containing d-mannose
  • Use wet wipes to fully remove fecal matter after using the bathroom, and always wipe from front to back
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and flush bacteria out of your urinary tract
  • Always urinate after intimacy
  • Avoid using douches and scented feminine hygiene products
  • Eat a healthy, pH-balancing diet

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of cranberry juice now and then. After all, it’s rich in components that support a healthy immune system. However, it’s wise to follow the above routine as well if you’re wondering how to avoid UTIs in the future.
