4 Reasons You Hate Cooking (and How to Change It)

April 1, 2025 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

Cooking can sometimes feel like an endless bother rather than a creative and fulfilling moment in the kitchen. Yet, love it or hate it, cooking is a part of life. Unless you have a private chef, you’re going to have to learn how to prepare a few meals, particularly if you have children to look after.

Yet, love it or hate it, you’re only going to find yourself miserable every time it’s time to make a meal. So, what is it that makes cooking feel so overwhelming, and more importantly how can you turn that around and turn it into something you enjoy? Here are some common reasons why people hate cooking, and what you can do to change that.

The Dishes Feel Endless

Sometimes all it takes is preparing a few ingredients to find your sink overloaded with dishes. Even with dishwashers, dishes can be a pain in the neck, sine you still have to load and unload. However, you can take away the frustration by avoiding letting things pile up as you go. You’ll find yourself a much less overwhelmed pile. Slowly but surely, wash each dish, and it will feel like much less work at the end of your meal.

Lack of Time

Sometimes we have busy jobs or social schedules that make us feel like we couldn’t possibly fit in cooking a meal into our day. With busy work schedules, it’s easy to choose something easy to eat rather than taking the time to cook.

However, you may find that it’s as simple as planning ahead. Consider meal prepping on a less hectic day, like a Sunday, to save yourself time the rest of the week. Tools like kitchen gadgets can make it go much faster, and significantly cut down your cooking time, while still delivering delicious meals.

Lack of Confidence

Maybe you made a mistake or two in the past, which has taken a hit on your confidence. However, everyone has had kitchen disasters before, and you shouldn’t let it hold you back from trying again. Instead of letting past kitchen failures haunt you, embrace your mistakes and learn as you go.

Don’t let failure hold you back from experimenting again, as most people who are masters in the kitchen have made plenty of mistakes on their way there. Approach cooking more like a fun experiment rather than a high-stakes cooking show.

It’s Boring

Sometimes people are just plain bored by cooking, which is perfectly within your rights. After all, cooking isn’t for everyone, not to mention eating the same thing every day can start to wear on your patience and try to find a way to embrace cooking in a way that excites you. Look for new recipes, check out a few food blogs, and try out a cooking show. You may find that if you are willing to embrace this, cooking can be more than just a boring obligation.
