3 Tips to Create More Closet Room in Your Space

February 13, 2025 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

Having your space cleaned up or even completely renovated doesn’t curb bad hoarding habits. If you’re constantly stuffing clothes, shoes, and random “just in case” items into an already crammed closet, you know the struggle. No matter how big your closet is, it always seems to fill up faster than expected.

The good news? You don’t need to knock down walls or invest in a second wardrobe to make more space. A few smart tricks can help you maximize what you already have. Here are 3 three tips to create more closet room without losing your mind.

Declutter with a “Tough Love” Mindset

Honestly—half the battle of making more closet space is getting rid of the things you don’t need. It’s easy to hold onto that dress you “might” wear someday or those jeans that haven’t fit since college, but if they’re just taking up space, they’ve got to go.

A great way to declutter is by using the one-year rule—if you haven’t worn it in the last year, it’s time to donate or sell it. Another trick? Enlist a brutally honest friend or family member to help. Someone who will say, “You have five nearly identical black sweaters—do you really need them all?”

Use Vertical Space

Most people only use their closet’s horizontal space, but the real secret to maximizing storage is looking up. If your closet has a ton of unused space above the hanging rod, you’re missing out on prime real estate.

Install extra shelves above your clothes for storing out-of-season items, handbags, or even shoe boxes. Hanging organizers, like fabric shelves or vertical cubbies, are also lifesavers for keeping sweaters and accessories tidy without eating up too much room.

Another pro tip? Use cascading hangers or tiered hangers to fit more clothes in the same amount of space. These let you hang multiple pieces vertically, saving a ton of room. You’ll be amazed at how much more you can fit when you stack upwards instead of spreading out.

Get Creative with Storage Hacks

Closet space isn’t just about what’s inside—it’s about making the most of every inch, even outside the closet. If your closet is bursting at the seams, consider these smart storage hacks:

  • Over-the-door organizers: Perfect for shoes, scarves, or accessories.
  • Under-bed storage bins: A great way to keep off-season clothes out of sight.
  • Hooks and pegs: Mount them inside the closet door or on empty wall space for bags, hats, or belts.
  • Drawer dividers and bins: Keep smaller items like socks, underwear, or jewelry neatly organized without turning into a mess.

No matter how small your closet is, there are always ways to maximize space. A little organzation goes a long way—and before you know it, you’ll actually be able to find your favorite clothes without digging through a mountain of stuff!
