Things You Can Do Now To Help Your Home Stay Cool This Summer

June 4, 2026 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

You know that moment in late May when you step outside and—bam—the heat wraps around you like a bear hug you didn’t ask for? That’s when you realize it’s almost time to crank up the AC and pray it holds out. Nobody wants to spend the dog days sweating inside, but keeping a home cool isn’t just about blasting the air conditioner. There’s a little more to it, and honestly, it’s not as overwhelming as it might sound. Here’s how you can prep your place so everyone stays comfortable, all summer long.

Give Your AC Some Love

Let’s be real. Air conditioners are kind of like cars in that they need TLC to keep humming along. Kick things off by cleaning or swapping out your air filter. A clogged filter is basically making your AC jog with a wet blanket over its face. While you’re at it, take a look at those vents. Dust loves to pile up there, and it messes with airflow.

Still with me? Next up: check on your outdoor unit. If it’s buried under a pile of leaves, branches, or your kid’s soccer ball, it’s time to clear it out. Good airflow means your system doesn’t have to break a sweat just to work right.

Seal the Deal (Windows and Doors, Especially)

Even if you’ve got the world’s best air conditioner, it’s no match for leaky windows and doors. Warm air sneaking in will have your AC working double time. Little things, like weatherstripping and caulking around window frames, can make a big difference. You’ll feel the change, especially on those extra hot afternoons when it feels like standing in front of an oven.

Don’t Forget the Ceiling Fans

You might be thinking, “Ceiling fans? Seriously?” They don’t actually cool the air. What they do is move air around, helping sweat evaporate and making you feel cooler. Make sure your fans spin counterclockwise. That pushes air down and creates a breeze that works with your AC, not against it.

Check Your Insulation

You wouldn’t wear a winter jacket in July, but your house should have a good “coat,” so to speak, all year long. Attic insulation especially makes a difference. If you don’t remember the last time you checked it, now’s probably the right time.

The Power of a Residential Heat Load Calculation

If you’re still sweating after all these tweaks (or shivering from a power bill that hits harder than the heat outside), this might sound a little technical, but a residential heat load calculation can seriously help. It basically figures out the exact amount of cooling power your home needs, avoiding those wild “just guess and hope” moments.

A Couple More Little Things

Heavy curtains or blackout shades keep the sun out and are worth the investment. And planting a tree or two near sunny windows? Shade never goes out of style. Simple, but surprisingly effective.

Wrapping Up (But Not Too Tightly)

Getting your house ready for nasty heat doesn’t have to feel like a second job. With a few small adjustments and a dose of common sense, you’ll have a home that feels like an oasis—even when the temperature outside is screaming.
